Cornelia Kost spoke to Casey Goggin, transfeminine artist, academic and activist, at the event „The Politics of Identity – Including Transgender and Self Determination“, organized by and in the British Embassy Berlin on January 30, 2025.
We talked about her understanding of gender and non-binaryness and from 6:17 minutes about the life-threatening situation for gender-diverse people in the USA under the Trump administration.

“You’ve told here in this event, your non-binary being is also a political statement. Why?“
„Yes, I find often trans women and trans fems in particular can be sharply criticized, also especially within the feminist movement, for really claiming and enjoying and performing certain parts of femininity. And I have observed that often trans women can thus carry the blame for enforcing some kind of binary that damages women and some kind of binary that is inherently misogynistic. And for me, declaring my identity as non-binary is in part my own armor against this argument that me enjoying certain aspects of femininity is somehow also me embodying patriarchal ideas of what it means to be a woman or what it means to be feminine. I’m asking people to perceive me as someone who is in fact cognizant of the binary and actually just choosing modes of being that are pleasurable to me. So yeah, that’s why I say non-binary is to speak to the haters.”
„Du hast bei dieser Veranstaltung gesagt, dass Dein nicht-binäres Sein auch ein politisches Statement ist. Warum eigentlich?“
„Ja, ich stelle fest, dass trans Frauen und insbesondere trans Männer oft scharf kritisiert werden, auch und gerade innerhalb der feministischen Bewegung, weil sie bestimmte Teile der Weiblichkeit wirklich beanspruchen, genießen und ausleben. Und ich habe beobachtet, dass trans Frauen oft die Schuld für die Durchsetzung einer Art von Binarität tragen, die Frauen schadet, und einer Binarität, die von Natur aus frauenfeindlich ist. Und für mich ist das Bekenntnis zu meiner nicht-binären Identität zum Teil meine eigene Verteidigung gegen das Argument, dass ich, wenn ich bestimmte Aspekte der Weiblichkeit genieße, irgendwie auch patriarchale Vorstellungen davon verkörpere, was es bedeutet, eine Frau zu sein oder was es bedeutet, weiblich zu sein. Ich bitte die Leute darum, mich als jemanden wahrzunehmen, die sich der Binarität bewusst ist und tatsächlich nur Seinsweisen wählt, die mir Spaß machen. Ja, deshalb sage ich nicht-binär, um die Hasser anzusprechen“.
